Narva, a painting by Wilhelm Siegfried Stavenhagen, engraved by Gustav Lange in the 19th century. Ivangorod Fortress (on the left of the engraving) was built in the 15th century by Muscovite Russia, intended to form a bulwark against the Livonian Order, being built opposite the powerful Livonian Hermann Castle established in the 13th century (on the right of the engraving). Between them is flowing the river Narva, which currently forms the international border between Russia and Estonia. The castles are still there, and it is a unique place, a frontier; nowhere else you can see two opposing historical fortresses on the border between European Union and Russia.
