The fragment of the wooden castle reconstruction, Anykščiai, Lithuania. Castles played an important role in the defence of the Lithuania from the Teutonic Order and the Crusaders in the XII-XV centuries. 71 castles are mentioned in the Teutonic chronicles on the ethnic territory of Lithuania at that time. Because of a wood abundance, building speed and a lack of stonemasons 64 of them were wooden and only 7 were stone castles.
