The symbols of the Camino de Santiago ― the Cross of Santiago and the yellow scallop shell in the stained-glass window in Cesis St John’s Church, Latvia. The red cross resembling a sword is the emblem of the Spanish Order of Santiago and the Portugese Order of St James of the Sword, which owe their names to the Santiago, also known in English as St James the Greater. These religious and knightly orders were founded in the 12th century to protect the pilgrimage routes of the Camino de Santiago and to drive out the Muslim Moors from Spain and Portugal during the Reqonquista. It is noteworthy to say, that construction of Latvian part of the Camino de Santiago was launched in 2019
