The view of St Canice's Cathedral, which dates from the 13th century, from the south, Kilkenny, Ireland. The cathedral, built in the Early Gothic architectural style, has a massive central tower and a crenellated parapet around the building for defence purposes. Such a principle of building fortified churches was widely used in lands conquered by the Knightly Orders (e.g. by the Teutonic Order in the former Prussia) during the Crusades in pursue to maximize a defence of population, wealth, and territory from enemies attacks
