The 14th century coat of arms of Cēsis (German: Wenden), the fragment of the 19th century stained-glass window in St John’s Church, Cēsis, Latvia. Since the 13th century the church and the castle of the Cesis belonged to the Livonian Order, an autonomous branch of the Teutonic Order, and its administrative headquarters was relocated there in the 15th century. Because of this, the Livonian knight on the city gate, depicted on the coat of arms, symbolised dependence to the Order, and, in turn, the city gate symbolised city rights
