The painting of Saint James the Greater and Saint Clare, National Palace of Sintra, Portugal. The Spanish Order’s of Santiago and the Portugese Order’s of St James of the Sword, which owe their names to the Santiago, also known in English as St James the Greater, insignia – a red cross resembling a sword is visible on cloaks of the saints. These religious and knightly orders were founded in the 12th century to protect the pilgrimage routes of the Camino de Santiago (where the Convent of St Clare was founded in Santiago de Compostela around 1260) and to drive out the Muslim Moors from Spain and Portugal during the Reqonquista.
