The entrance of Castello Lanzun or Lanzun Tower, the 15th-century fortified farmhouse, Mensija, Malta. The tower is used as the headquarters of the Military and Hospitaller Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem in Malta. The Order of St Lazarus was originally founded by crusaders to care for pilgrims struck with leprosy in Jerusalem around 1119, and many knights of the order were lepers themselves. The Cross of the Order of Saint Lazarus is an eight-pointed cross, the same as the Maltese Cross, but green of colour (two crosses are visible on the gates in the photo), probably, chosen to distinguish the symbol of the order from the white cross of the Hospitallers of St John, the red cross of the Templars, and the black cross of the Teutonic Knigths.
