The fragment of the portrait of Louis XIV of France painted by Hyacinthe Rigaud in 1701. The King wears French cavalry armour decorated with the fleurs de lis and the blue sash of the Order of the Holy Spirit across his chest with the badge hanging on his left side. The sash and the badge are depicted here because Louis XIV, as the King of France, was the Grand Master of the Order of the Holy Spirit, the senior French order of chivalry, established in 1578. Also, in addition, he was the Grand Master of the Order of Saint Louis (the lower precedence than the Order of the Holy Spirit) established by Louis XIV himself in 1693 and the Order of Saint Michael (the lowest precedence of the above) founded in 1469.
