The interior of the 14th century Archcathedral Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint Andrew in Frombork, Poland. The rood cross (the crucifix) or the triumphal cross hanging from the top of the arch above the entrance to the chancel is visible in the picture. This is a medieval tradition to mount the crucifix in this way or on a beam across of the arch, usually at the level of the top of columns. Later, in most cases, such crosses were hung on walls of churches.
