Half-armour in Savoyard style, Kuressaare Castle, Estonia. The term “Savoyard style”, especially regarding the helmet, visible in the picture, is used because it is associated with the equipment of the cuirassier units formed by Charles Emanuel I, Duke of Savoy in the 16th-17th centuries. The design of the helmet suggests a human face or skull and its function was not only to protect the wearer, but to terrify the enemy; this is the reason why these helmets are also referred to as Totenkopf ("death's head," in German)
