The St Mary's Tower or The Comino Tower, constructed by the Knights of the Order of St John in the 17th century to guard the island of Comino. This watchtower was manned and acted as a part of Malta, Gozo and Comino islands coastal defense and early warning system to inform about approaching enemies by means of a fire signal. To achieve this, it was positioned in a field of visibility of neighboring towers which allowed fast transmission of a message to the Order’s headquarters in Valletta
