The statue of St George, the House of the Blackheads, Riga, Latvia. It was mounted on this building because origins of the Blackheads, as a military association of unmarried merchants and foreigners, mostly Germans, are traced to the 14th century St George’s Night Uprising of Estonian indigenous tribes against German and Danish conquerors in the wake of the Northern Crusades. According to the legend about an emergence of the Blackheads, it started when a group of foreign merchants participated in the defence of Reval (today’s Tallinn in Estonia) during these events
