Ventspils Castle, Latvia. Ventspils (German: Windau) together with Klaipėda (German: Memel) were two main strongholds on the South-West coast of Livonia during the 13th-14th centuries. Probably, the first building in Ventspils was the large, quadrangular tower (a keep, donjon or bergfried), visible in the centre of the picture, built by the Livonian Order in the 13th century. Later, in the 13th-14th century there additionally were built four wings with an inner yard and in such a way the quadrangular shape castle was formed. It is interesting, that the tower is still in the quadrangular shape even though towers in some other castles were rebuilt later in the round shape, because square towers were easier undermined or damaged
